| Longhorn cattle with their distinctive look and renowned for their unusual horns, are an ancient cattle who came close to extinction in the 1880's. Their history is linked to that of Robert Bakewell, livestock pioneer of the 1700's. Docile in nature and excellent mothers there were 2,500 pedigree females at the begining of this millenium. The Carn Edward Herd calve during the spring. They are traditionally reared on grass and home grown barley. The animals will be culled locally and hung for 5 weeks. The result will be beef which is well-textured, lean and extremely flavoursome.
